- What transformation in the food production sector could climate change cause?
- Climate change is expected to have a significant impact on the food production sector and is likely to affect both the quality and quantity of food produced. Some transformations that may occur in the food production sector due to climate change are:
Changes in crop yields: Climate change is expected to alter temperature and precipitation patterns, which may affect crop productivity. In some regions, there may be a reduction in yields due to droughts, heat waves and extreme weather events. Conversely, in other regions, increased rainfall and a longer growing season can lead to higher yields.
Shifting geographic distribution of crops: As climate changes, some crops may become unsuitable for certain regions, while other crops may become more viable in those same regions. For example, in regions with higher temperatures, crops such as maize and millet may become resistant to wheat or barley.
Increased water scarcity: Climate change can lead to reduced water availability, which can be detrimental to yields. This is especially true in regions where irrigation is already a challenge.
