The Public Affairs, Communications & Sustainability Director at Coca-Cola HBC Bulgaria speaks with ESGnews about the company's sustainable practices, key milestones, and vision for the future
In an interview with ESGnews, Zhaklin Tsocheva, Public Affairs, Communications & Sustainability Director at Coca-Cola HBC Bulgaria, outlines how sustainability has evolved into an essential pillar of the company's growth strategy. Marking key anniversaries at the Kostinbrod and Bankya production facilities, she discusses manufacturing modernization, local community investments, and the strategic milestones shaping the organization's forward journey.
Ms. Tsocheva, Coca-Cola HBC Bulgaria is celebrating 30 years of operations in Kostinbrod and 20 years in Bankya. How has the company’s approach to sustainable manufacturing transformed over these decades, and what brings you the greatest sense of accomplishment today?
Three decades in Kostinbrod and two in Bankya stand as clear proof of our long-term commitment to Bulgaria. Over these years, sustainability has shifted from being a standalone priority to becoming deeply woven into how we innovate, adapt, and grow.
Today, both bottling plants run entirely on 100% renewable electricity. Our greatest source of pride lies in the fact that, for our entire team, sustainability isn't just a corporate promise—it is reflected in tangible results. That is what gives us the confidence to keep investing and driving our business forward with a clear view toward the decades ahead.
Together with Fantastico, you launched the joint initiative "A Drop of Life for the Forest." What inspired you to turn the restoration of fire-damaged forests into a cause that brings together businesses, partners, and consumers?
Because we firmly believe that some causes transcend any single enterprise. The devastating wildfires in recent years highlighted just how challenging and long the recovery process is—sometimes taking anywhere from 30 to 50 years. Following last year's €100,000 grant from The Coca-Cola Foundation to support the National Association of Volunteers in Bulgaria in their wildfire fighting efforts, taking the next step felt natural.
I am deeply grateful to our partners at Fantastico, the Southwestern State Enterprise, the National Association of Volunteers, and our consumers for joining us on this vital journey. Through October 16, 2026, for every bottle of Bankya or Rosa water purchased at Fantastico supermarkets, Coca-Cola HBC Bulgaria and Fantastico will donate €0.10 toward planting nearly 12,000 trees in one of the country's most severely impacted forest areas. Crucially, our commitment extends beyond planting to include long-term nurture and care for the young saplings.
On a personal level, this initiative holds special meaning for me. I have immense reverence and affection for the mountains. Summiting Bulgaria’s highest peaks has repeatedly reminded me of how fragile nature is—and how quickly it can be lost. I am convinced that when businesses, public institutions, NGOs, and individuals unite, we can do far more than restore damaged landscapes—we can foster a deeper, more responsible relationship with the environment.
