Only one in four cups of soft drinks consumed in our country contains added sugar, and that amount continues to decline steadily. This is according to data from the annual independent expert study on the caloric content of soft drinks sold on the Bulgarian market. In fact, 75% of the total volume of beverages sold in the country — including juices and nectars — contains no added sugar.
“For yet another year, our industry has achieved significant progress and contributed to promoting a more balanced diet. For more than two decades, the sector has implemented targeted strategies to reduce added sugar in beverages. Our efforts to support better calorie management among Bulgarians are ongoing. In addition to reformulating existing products, the industry is focusing on developing and promoting new lower- or no-sugar alternatives, offering smaller package sizes, encouraging moderate consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, and ensuring consumers have access to a wide and well-informed choice,” said Zhana Velichkova, Executive Director of BSDA.
