Harmonica Foods, the Bulgarian organic food producer, has been named winner of the Best Organic Food Processor category at the EU Organic Awards, one of the highest honors in Europe's organic sector.
The award was presented on September 23, 2026 -EU Organic Day - recognizing small and medium-sized enterprises that have built excellent, innovative and sustainable projects across the organic value chain. The EU Organic Awards are jointly organized by the European Commission, the European Economic and Social Committee, the European Committee of the Regions, COPA-COGECA, and IFOAM Organics Europe, with a jury drawn from these institutions as well as the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union. The honor carries no monetary prize, but stands as one of the sector's most credible marks of recognition, judged by the very bodies that shape organic policy across the continent.
For Harmonica Foods, the award caps two decades of steady, deliberate growth. Founded in 2006, the company has built its business around close partnerships with local Bulgarian farmers and manufacturers, working to make traceable, high-quality organic food more accessible to consumers. Today, its portfolio spans more than 30 products, produced by a team of 47 people who have kept the company's founding priorities - short supply chains, fair trade, circular economy practices, and community education - at the center of its operations even as it has scaled.
The recognition arrives at a moment of significant momentum for organic farming across the EU. Organically farmed land in the bloc has grown nearly 80% over the past decade, now covering close to 17 million hectares - roughly 11% of all EU agricultural land. The sector has also become an unlikely engine of generational renewal in agriculture: more than a fifth of young farmers in the EU now work organically, nearly double the rate across farming as a whole. Consumer demand has kept pace, with the EU organic market reaching €46.5 billion in 2023, the second-largest in the world after the United States.
Against that backdrop, the EU Organic Awards - launched under the European Commission's 2021 Action Plan for the Development of Organic Production — are designed to spotlight the producers and processors driving that growth responsibly. Harmonica Foods' selection as Best Organic Food Processor places it among a small group of companies held up as models for how organic production can deliver genuine environmental, economic and social value.
"This award reflects two decades of work with our farming partners, not a single achievement," the company noted in response to the honor, pointing to the network of local growers and manufacturers that has underpinned its model since the beginning.
